For many Muslims living here in America whether we are born here; have full citizenship; African American; Arab or Arab decent; converts or reverts, the biased treatment that are experienced by many Muslims has made this a bitter pill to swallow specifically for the law abiding, hard working innocent citizens exposed to the inequities that exist in our society.
There are many reasons contributing to the excessive scrutiny that Muslims are under by mainstream society, one main aspect is the generalized view of Muslims by society which bases the population of Muslims on what is considered the dominant group whom are those of the Arab culture or of having Arab descent. The subordinate groups within the Population of Muslims are actually larger than those of the Arab or “Arab like” cultures living here in America and this for many poses a problem in itself.
The reality of islamaphobia and its effects are devastating to say the least. The unfair examination and mistreatment of innocent Men and Women in our communities only compounds the dissension that already exists in our society. The hindrance to openly and comfortably practice our religion has also become an unspoken reality for many communities of Muslims here in America because of the underlying fears that many of us have come to live under.
Dealing with the inequities imposed on law abiding, peaceful Muslims that willingly and openly contribute to the fabric that holds our communities together in this country has proven to be a very compound issue to manage.
Taking the abuse and mistreatment with a smile while your innocence is proven or to quietly hope that the unwarranted scrutiny you receive while trying to uphold your obligations as a consumer, patient, student or worker will quickly subside is not the answer to fixing the underlying problem.
