Irish Quest: A review

Irish Quest is an educational trivia game about Ireland. Players learn facts about heritage and culture while advancing through the game. Made by Quest Games, Irish Quest is part of a game series also including English Quest, Welsh Quest and Scottish Quest.

The game is meant for 2-6 players and is appropriate for those 8 and older. Players can also participate in teams.

Packaging and Product Presentation

The packaging is high quality. Though the game is generally comparable to games like Trivial Pursuit, the production details of the packaging and product are of even higher quality. The game itself is easy to put away (it’s hard to fold it improperly).

Matching the game theme, it’s colored green and has gold embossed writing. The game itself is placed over a map of Ireland on the board. Categories include: history, land and nature, culture and modern.

The game also includes a short stack of Blarney cards (comparable to Community Chest cards in Monopoly), for boxes of question cards containing the trivia, answer explanation book, game placeholders, tiles, sovereigns (currency), game pieces and dice.

Each item has its own place in the box so it’s easy to repackage.

Objective

To win the game, players must collect letters Q, U, E, S and T (QUEST) by traveling throughout Ireland on the game map and answering questions correctly.

The bonus objective to this game involves learning about the history, culture and geography of Ireland, making it an excellent game for anyone wanting to know more about their Irish heritage. It’s also fun if you’re looking to show off your existing knowledge.

The included book goes into further detail about the answers so that participants gain a full understanding of the response.

Gameplay

After the first few turns, gameplay moves pretty quickly. There is enough diversity in the questions and categories to keep players entertained and the speed and style of play is not cumbersome due to its simplicity.

What I enjoy most about the game is the elegant packaging and accurate treatment of culture and history. While the Blarney cards are cute and add fun to the game, you won’t find an abundance of leprechauns or beer jokes in the game. Instead, players get to know the history and culture in an in-depth, interactive, entertaining way.
