Controversial radio conservative Rush Limbaugh used the term "Paddy" in reference of President Obama's recent visit to Ireland. IrishCentral reported on Limbaugh's comments regarding Obama's trip to Ireland.
Limbaugh apparently read the IrishCentral article and responded to it on his radio show, defending his use of the term "Paddy" by indicating it is a logical nickname.
Let's take a look at Limbaugh's previous comments and his reasons for using this perjorative term as it relates to the president, Irish people and the Irish diaspora.
Limbaugh intended to directly insult the president. Beyond using the offensive word "Paddy," Limbaugh's point was that Obama doesn't look or act Irish--or that since he's also Kenyan, he isn't very Irish or Irish American by manner of culture or heritage.
Limbaugh questioned Obama's reasons for visiting Ireland. It's true that visiting Ireland and claiming Irish heritage is a classic move for Democratic presidents and candidates hoping to earn the Irish American vote. Beyond the connection that many Irish Americans wish to feel to Ireland, it evokes memories of JFK, a fondly remembered American president.
Limbaugh's right--the president is seeking an Irish American vote. However, that's not all he's doing. Ireland is a key business partner. Trade and tourism go both ways.
There's something in it for the Irish. Ireland's tourism industry is essential to its financial sucess, and tradtionally, the United States has been a source of tourists. As the economy slowly improves, Ireland's tourism industry hopes to welcome more American tourists.
Limbaugh has a history of using offensive terminology and racial slurs. Limbaugh's hatred isn't limited to those with Irish descent. He's not very fond of Latinos and African Americans, either.
With so many subtle inclusions of anti-Irish language in modern America, it might be easy to make excuses for people like Rush Limbaugh...but he's a media man and a politician. Simply put, he knows that the term is offensive.
