Plans for the Shell gas pipeline off the coast of County Mayo have been put on hold as the company comes up with an alternative safety plan.
An Bord Pleanála announced Shell was given an additional three months until May 31st to submit plans that would ensure there were no safety risks to the local residents. The Company was initially expected to submit these plans by February 5th.
The Corrib gas field is the largest engineering project ever undertaken in Ireland. Located just 83 kilometers off the coast of Ireland, Shell is seeking to lay a pipeline linking the offshore gasfield to the onshore refinery at Bellanboy Bridge, Co. Mayo.
According to the Shell Web site, the Corrib project is made up of four parts; the offshore subsea infrastructure in the Corrib field, the offshore pipeline, the onshore pipeline and the gas processing terminal at Bellanboy Bridge.
The Shell-to-Sea campaign group called on An Bord Pleanála to reject the pipeline planning application in its entirety.
