Music Challenge: Simply the best music trivia game on the iPhone (or anywhere else)

Music Challenge for the iPhone

Honestly, I can't say I was overwhelmed with excitement when I first booted up Music Challenge on my iPhone. I love trivia games, but prefer almost anything over music trivia. It's not that I don't like music -- I have over 700 songs loaded into my phone and play two musical instruments (not counting the kazoo!) -- it's just that I'm simply not going to be able to tell you what Beyonce's first number one hit was or even give you the title of a single Kelly Clarkson song.

So, I was pleasantly surprised by just how addicting the Music Challenge trivia game can be, especially considering that it gives me a little help when trying to figure out some of that 'pop' trivia from the 00's by providing me with power-ups that let me ask the world or simply narrow down the choices so that my attempt to name Jessica Simpson's last hit song will at least be 50/50.

Those familiar with Movie Challenge will recognize some of the different mini-games, like the Trivia game, True/False game or the hangman-like Gig mini-game. But there are also some neat additions, like a fill-in-the-blank game and a mini-game that has you matching hit song to artist or album. And the sounds are awesome. I especially like how the crowd cheers or boos as you guess letters during the the Gig mini-game.

The categories are also well thought out, with 1 Hit Wonders, Bands, Awards & TV, Male Artists and Female Artists as well as music from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s. And believe me, trying to remember the name of that band who did that one hit wonder when you were in high school can really strain your brain.

But it is one category that takes Music Challenge from being simple a great music trivia game to perhaps the best music trivia game ever: My Music.

One of the first things you'll do when starting a new game is to choose whether or not you want to include your own music into the game. If you do, Music Challenge will scan your iPod music library and add in your songs, albums and artists. And don't worry, the next time you boot up the game, it will remember all the songs you imported, though if you've downloaded new songs to the iPhone or iPod Touch, you'll need to load them again in the game.

In My Music, you are often greeted by the sound of your own music and are tested on song titles, what album or artist produced the song, which album covers go with which albums and the hangman-like mini-game based on something out of your music collection. And one of the coolest mini-games is picking out the cover of the album to the song that's playing, which is made more difficult by the mix-mash of different album covers that blink in and out of the screen.

And if you are like me and have hundreds of songs loaded into your library, it can actually be quite difficult at times.

The addition of a category based on your music library is a stroke of genius that really turns Music Challenge into quite an addicting game. And at $1.99, it's well worth the price.
