As of this moment, AT&T is the only wireless carrier to carry the iPhone in its repertoire, giving it a tremendous advantage over its competition, especially with the hysteria surrounding iPhone 4 presales. While AT&T is more than happy with the current agreement, the wireless users at large are not, clamoring for the iPhone to make its way to Verizon, Sprint, and other carriers that they use. Now it seems there is a possibility that the iPhone could be coming to Verizon wireless sooner than expected.
This is not the first Verizon iPhone rumor, but DigiTimes has reported that Taiwan’s Pegatron Technology has received an order to ship a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 to Apple in the fourth quarter of 2010. This would also coincide with the expiration of Apple’s exclusivity agreement with AT&T, allowing them to put their wonder device on any carrier.
The only other road block was difference in the network design, as all iPhones currently use a GSM network, which made T-Mobile the logical choice to get their hands on the iPhone before the rest of the competition. A CDMA version would be Verizon capable, which would be a major blow to the Droid’s luster.
Being the actual date of the exclusivity agreement being a secret that no one outside of Apple or AT&T knows of, it could be hard to determine an actual release date for a Verizon iPhone. If it were to end by October, then Apple could be in for an epic holiday season the likes of which we’ve never seen before. If it doesn’t then it will certainly end by the year, providing Apple with an ace up its sleeve for 2011.
