The research firm IDC has recently predicting that the iPhone and iPod Touch will have over 300,000 apps by the end of 2010. The firm reported this along with news on Apple’s new Tablet device here. Although it is a very large number, it is not a bold prediction if you consider the app output over the last few months.
Since the iPhone’s release, app releases have increased exponentially. Considering two months ago, there were 85,000 apps, and last month the hallowed 100,000 app mark was surpassed, the sheer output of app releases is massive. The app developers have also been steadily increasing in numbers and if the Apple’s app conduct review laxes, there is no reason for app developers to increase further, as well as increasing app output.
With 2010 approaching, the App Store on iTunes is getting better as each day progresses. More and more apps are released that are of a better quality and standing. With thousands of apps released every week, there is no reason to believe that there won’t be 300,000 apps by the end of next year. In fact, there’s by the end of 2015, it would be no surprise to see over ONE MILLION apps on the iTunes app store.

Looking at the graphs provided at

it looks like 300,000 app will be hit in early 2011.
appexplorer.com is also a lot easier for app searching than iTunes, especially with 300,000 apps...
