On the second night of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced who won its Apple Design Awards for 2010. These prestigious awards “recognize technical excellence, innovation, superior technology adoption, high performance, and outstanding design.” They are highly prized among developers (these are the people who created the apps).

Nominations are made by members of the Apple developer community. Winners receive a silver trophy and the honor of having helped set new technical and design standards for all Apple developers. Apple considers these apps the best, among the best, in the App Store.

This year’s winning apps in the Apple iPad category are:

1. Star Walk for iPad – This app is so cool—it is like having your own personal planetarium. Simply tilt your iPad toward the night sky and a stunning 3D representation of what you saw in the night sky will appear on your iPad. See more than 9,000 stars, planets and constellations and then bookmark your findings. 2. Pinball HD – Boasts 3D graphics that illustrate 3 stunning tables. Each table has its own mission, graphics, and characters. Move the iPad the way that you would if you were playing a real pinball machine. Comes with music, sound effects and voices. Compare your scores to local scores or global scores. Check out this video.

3. Flight Control HD – In this exciting game you are an air traffic controller. You must help planes land without any of them crashing. The airport gets progressively busier. There are 8 maps, 3 airfields, beautiful graphics and you can listen to your iPod music library as you play. In multiplayer mode you and your opponent compete on the same iPad to capture each other’s planes. This game is very addictive. Take a look.

4. TabToolkit for iPad – This music notation viewer has multi-track audio playback. It is both a fun learning tool for beginners as well as tool for helping musicians of all skill levels practice. Here is a video of it.

5. Financial Times iPad Edition – The British equivalent of the Wall Street Journal looks just like a real newspaper, but you can arrange the pages any way that you want. Market data is interactive. Pictures and videos augment the beautiful layout and typography. Check it out here.
