Posterous makes blogging fun and easy.
It wasn't so long ago that blogging was considered hard.
In order to create a blog, you needed a few things: hosting, a domain name, and lots of time to write. This was just the minimal investment to get your new blog off the ground, mind you. What? You want people to be able to find your blog and actually read and comment on your posts?
Blogging isn't a Field of Dreams - if you build it they don't always come. In that case, you'd find yourself posting links to your blog posts on social bookmarking sites, or leaving comments on other blogs. This could take hours. And, if you expect to make any money from your new blog, you better set up advertising.
Fast forward a year or so (yes, times change quickly on the net) and there are multitide of sites that ease the pain of creating, managing and promoting your blog, whether for personal or business use.
Sites like Wordpress.com, Typepad or Blogger are great options for people who want an end-to-end blogging solution. However, there is still a learning curve to writing your blog posts, posting images and video and linking to content.
What if I told you that a professionally styled, full featured blog was only an email message away?
Posterous is a new service that provides anyone with an email account the ability to blog. If you know how to send an email message, you know all you need to in order to start posting your content to the web. Videos, Photos, Links - you name it. If you can attach it, Posterous can blog it.
Its actually quite ingenious.
Sending an email to post@posterous.com will get you started. The sign up process is really that simple. Posterous will recognize your email address, and if its the first time you're sending an email, set you up a new account. From there, Posterous will scan your message - the Subject Line of your email message becomes the Title of your new blog post, and the content in the message will be included on your post. If you attach a photo (or even a series of photos), Posterous will create a slideshow for you. If its a video, Posterous will embed it in your blog post. If you post a link - well, I think you get the picture.
What makes this great is that essentially, you can blog from anywhere - home, work or even on the go with your cell phone (so long as it can send email messages).
The other really nice thing Posterous can do is auto post the content you send in to other social networking sites. Do you like to share photos with your friends on Flickr or Facebook? If so, Posterous can automatically send those same photos to multiple social sites. The same goes for video,
Lets say that you have multiple interests, or perhaps a need for a personal blog and business blog. Create as many new Posterous sites as you want - they are free. For those who are interested in analytics and seeing the number of visitors to your site, Posterous seemlessly integrates with Google Analytics, a free tool for measuring web site performance.
Posterous does many a wonderful thing through the use of its email based management, but it has one last trick up its sleeve for would be bloggers - a built-incommunity. Posterous users commonly subscribe to each others content, and each Posterous page comes with its own RSS feed which gives you the ability to deliver your content to users all over the web. So now you can write with ease and find others to read your writing. What's not to like?
If you have been interested in blogging but were afraid to take that leap because it seemed too technical you should really check out Posterous. It is one of the most feature rich blogging platforms out there and designed for maximum ease of use. If you can send an email message you can blog, with Posterous.

Great post - and you're right, the one thing all of these blog solutions have needed for some time is a built in community. That's what made LiveJournal such a treat, when it was new at least. You always knew there were people out there who were not just talking, but listening as well.
Having looked it over, it really is a great way to de-mystify blogging. After all, people know e-mail. But blogging, somehow, always sounds like chiseling shapes out of rock to people, instead of just writing stuff.
Thanks for the comment Eric! Yeah, I love sites like Posterous and Tumblr, but i think Posterous is even easier to use which is why it is a good starting point for people too scared to blog.
