For those of you in the 'know', the phrase link building is quite common and it's importance understood. For those who are new to marketing/promoting websites, let me give you a quick overview.
Google and other search providers measure your website/s worth thru numerous factors. One of the biggest factors in evaluating website searchability and PageRank (another term we'll discuss in another article soon) is link building.
Think of your website as a house in a neighborhood that you paid alot of money for and you want to get a good return on your money. If the neighbor next to you has a really run-down house with junk all around, it is going to drive down the price/value of your house and scare prospects and buyers away.
If instead you have a celebrity that lives in a huge house across the street, just the opposite will happen. People may like your house, but love the surrounding neighbors, bringing thier assessment of the house purchase to a higher level.
Putting this all in perspective, your house is to your neighborhood, as your website is to the all the other sites it links too. So the sites you choose to link to could be considered your internet neighbors. On the internet we have the choice of who we link to. Now if only picking our own real next door neighbors could be that easy.
Linking to alot of sites with little value or relevance to your site and/or linking to a site with a bad reputation(by accident or not) will bring your sites search value/searchability down. Linking to sites similar to you in topic/relevance, as well as linking to higher Google PageRank sites and higher Alexa/traffic sites will bring your sites(searchability level/pagerank) up
Search engine optimization takes a lot of skill, knowledge and perseverance, but stick with it and learn what you can and don't be afraid to talk to a consultant about your site as well. There is an article link below to give you more insight to back links and site searchability.
