With the continual growth of consumers using the internet to buy what they need, Ecommerce is becoming a great way to sell your products or services and get your name & brand out there.
You need an attractive/eye catching website. I wouldn't recommend flash or anything like that, simply because it is harder to index by search engines and there is a small % of people that still do not have have flash installed/enabled or they are on dial up and it takes too long to load.
Having your website designed to look clean, current, relevant, inviting and easy to navigate around is essential. This is where it pays off to spend a little money to have the site designed professionally, instead of doing it yourself. You site will be with you for the duration of your business, so skimping here, will cost you money later, it's a small investment that is well worth it.
Getting traffic to your website is obviously a fundamental component, but unlike most people assume, it's not so easy. It helps to think about a good domain name, possibly using keywords that you want people to find you with, while remembering to keep it short and snappy.
You need to hand submit your site to DMOZ, Google and Yahoo at minimum. If you get listed in DMOZ, and it can take some time, Google will rate your site much higher than those not listed. DMOZ is free to list. Another good directory to get listed in is the Yahoo directory, although you have to pay a yearly fee if you are a commercial organization. It goes without saying that Google is an obvious neccessity to list with.
If you are serious about selling online you will eventually realize that you need to use the services of a good SEO consultant/company. A good SEO consultant will tell you exactly what they are doing to get your website to the top of Google and the other search engines.
Invest in your business online wisely and it will be fruitful back to you with good financial returns.
