Anyone in the Internet marketing game always complains that they want more traffic to their website. Almost like any addict, once you have what you want, you always crave more. However, just like anything, there are many self-imposed obstacles we create to sabotage our own happiness. With Internet marketing, it is how we set up our websites and how we write our offers that will attract visitors and convert them to buying customers. It may be an aspiration, nevertheless because we must have traffic to our web site to convert sales, I call it an obstacle.
Traffic is a requirement, and you cannot make money online without it. If your web site attracts only 200 or 500 visitors per month you cannot achieve your traffic goals, you cannot attract visitors to paying customers; and, you cannot make money from your affiliate programs and AdSense campaigns.
Now that we established the importance of having a good amount of traffic on your website it’s time to talk about why some websites don’t receive web traffic:
- Your pages are called: “about us”, “products”, “contact us” and the rest of the pages “company name”
- You write a title like “affordable attorney services for small businesses” and the content of the page is about where your company is located and you don’t use any of the words from the title in your content – in other words there is no correlation between the title and the content of a page
- You think that if you stuff the keyword metatag you’ll rank well for those keywords
- Don’t have unique descriptive titles to each page
- You either don’t use the keywords from the title on your page or you overuse it (the result of this will lead to content that will look odd for readers and your rankings will not improve)
- You don’t know exactly what does it mean to have search engine optimized content
- The URLs of your pages are dynamically generated and are not in a canonical form
- You never thought to build a search engine friendly link architecture
- You don’t have a list of keywords to target in your content or you do have one but don’t know how to use it – there is no strategy, no planning
- Your incoming links are not that great
- You don’t monitor the stats of your website
- You don’t market your content – the only thing you do is to publish the article and wait
- You don’t know anything about SEO and you don’t want to pay for someone else to do it for you and teach you the basics
Improving the traffic on your website is not that hard.
Here are some things to consider to increase traffic to your website:
- Build a list of keywords to target and develop a strategy in how to use them:
a. The main page of the website should target the most important and competitive keyword
b. Start by using long tail keywords
c. Build articles in a pyramid structure: The top article will have the main keyword and the rest will target related keywords with modifiers
- Learn how to use keywords in content
- Every page should have an unique title that contains the main keywords for that page
- Learn how to create interesting titles
- Optimize your URLs
- Enhance the way your content “travels” – this means that you have to have a quick way for people to share your content on social networks
- Have a strategy in what articles to write
- Market your content on social networks
- Build links to your website
- Analyze the stats of your website and take action
Let me know what you think about what I said above. Please, feel free to add your thought on this.
