SLEEP 2009 is the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, LLc. Their annual conference this year is being held June 6-11 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle.

According to some interesting findings disclosed from one of the studies, people who claim to be video game addicts sleep less than other people, but don't seem to recognize their habit could be responsible.

A University of Arkansas spokesperson claims previous research had shown excessive gamers spent less time in bed, have longer sleep latency and shorter REM latency.

The study examined data from 137 university students, mostly women, with a mean age of 22. Gamers were classified as either "casual" or "excessive"--thoe who spent more than seven hours a week using the Internet to play video games.

Another research study done by the Stanford University School of Medicine in 2008 outlines other signs of video game addiction.

Here are some of the key symptoms.

For Children:

1. Most of their "free time", non-school hours is spent playing video games or on the computer.

2. Fatigue or a tendency to fall asleep in school.

3. Worsening grades.

4. Dropping out of activities and social groups, clubs and sports.

5. Irritability when not playing computer games.

For Adults:

1. Neglecting personal relationships with friends and family to spend more time playing video games.

2. Becoming so involved playing video games they neglect to eat, sleep or bathe.

3. Obsession or preoccupations with video games when not playing them.

4. Physical symptoms like dry eyes, headaches, backaches after playing video games.

5. Lying to others about computer use or video game playing time.

Video game addiction treatment facilities are popping up all around the country, and finding help for a loved one who is overly dependent is an important step in helping them get back to the real life they once enjoyed.
