E-cigarettes, helping smokers quit or enticing children to smoke?

electroniccigarettereview.co.uk

E-cigarettes are causing much controversy in both smoking and anti-smoking circles. These electronic cigarettes are unapproved by the United States government and are virtually unstudied, yet thousands of people are flocking to the Internet to buy them.

For $100-150, a user can buy an e-cigarette starter kit:

1. Battery-powered cigarette
2. Replaceable cartridges that typically contain nicotine (though cartridges can be bought without nicotine), flavoring and propylene glycol.
3. Flavors include tobacco, menthol and cherry.

Buyers should beward that propylene glycol is used in the product, Antifreeze, and to create artificial fog in theatre productions.

Many children's experts worry that the various flavors the e-cigarettes are available in, will entice children to smoke.

There is virtually no second-hand smoke involved in e-cigarettes and many e-smokers are using them as a sneaky way to get around smoking bans. Other smokers are using them as a self-prescribed treatment for quitting real cigarettes.

One study, being financed by the e-cigarette company, Runyan, shows that the nicotine contained in an e-cigarette is only 10-18 percent that of a normal cigarette.

However, the American Lung Association, the American Cancer Society Action Network, the American Heart Association and the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, recently joined forced and called for the removal of e-cigarettes from the United State's marketplace.

Currently, most e-cigarettes are being manufactured in China.

Thanks for this summary. I don't think kids would pick up smoking because of flavor. There are many other reasons and none of them is related to e-cigs only. Let's not fool ourselves.

I am trying very hard to have my wife quit smoking. Her problem is that she loves her smoke breaks, it allows her to take her mind off things. She is not really willing to give this up. I am considering to order her an electronic cigarette with zero nicotine cartridge. Has anyone tried that? I found this a good site to get started: ecigarettes365 . com

Hey kids! Let's go use a Chinese product (and we all know what sticklers for safety the Chinese are) to flood our lungs with food coloring, propylene glycol, water vapor, and the cancer-promoter nicotine for 30 years. What fun!

And the manufacturers? As soon as the slightest medical trouble shows up, they'll disappear right back into the woodwork, retiring on your money.

Sue them? Every jury in the country will say, "You idiot!"

The argument that the flavors e-cigarette cartridges are available in will "entice" children to smoke is fallacious. This assumes that adults do not have tastebuds and do not enjoy things that are available in different flavors. These products are not marketed to children any more than sex lubricants that come in cherry, strawberry, and other various flavors are marketed to children. Flavored condoms aren't being attacked for having different flavors, either. Neither are liquors. Being made with various flavors available does not equate with being marketed toward children. Quite bluntly, that's just stupid.

Your comment about propylene glycol is also meant to be deceptive, since propylene glycol is also rated as SAFE by the FDA for use as a direct FOOD ADDITIVE and is present in many other things, including shampoos (try herbal essences), conditioners, and other products.

Do some real research, get your facts right and then write another entry, Robert.

    Hi Ken
First of all thumbs up to Phoenix - couldn't agree more.
Gene also needs to check their facts about Nicotine as again this drug is NOT linked to cancer as it is only the combusiotn of tobacco that causes the production of cancer inducing chemicals.
I gave up smoking real cigarettes using an E-Cig 2 weeks ago and was very impressed. I had failed to quit using conventional methods (gum, patches etc) on several occasions - probably for similar reasons to Ken's wife in that I actually enjoy smoking/short breaks most of the time and the E-Cig (DS901B although better ones may be available now such as the Evo etc) has helped me to continue my smoking habit in a much less dangerous way - they may not have been proven to be completely safe as yet but I have yet to hear of health complication directly related to an E-cig. My wife is a non-smoker and has no problem with my using it near her as no smell too!! You can choose nicotine strength to either help quit or carry on as u are :-)
