MTV is starting a multi-year campaign to bring digital abuse to light and try to prevent it. Some types of digital abuse include: cyberbullying, "sexting," and digital dating abuse. There have always been bullies in this world and with advancing technology they have now seemed to invade our homes through our computers, cell phones, etc.
A study by MTV interviewed (online survey) 600 teens and 647 adults from September 11 - September 22, 2009. Here are some of the statistics this study found:
- 50% of 14-24 year olds have experienced digital abuse
- 30 percent have sent or received nude photos
- 22% spread lies about someone online
- 45% have seen people being mean to each other on social networking sites
- 12% have logged into someone's profile without their permission
I found these percentages through the news release and the Executive Summary on MTV's A Thin Line website. You can also read the Full Report.
The news release also gives an overview of the elements that will comprise the "A Thin Line" initiative. Some of the elements include: "True Life: I Have Digital Drama"; Redraw the Line Challenge; Online and Mobile Tools; Liz Claiborne Inc.'s It's Time To Talk Day; etc.
If you go to MTV's A Thin Line website you can: Take a quiz (and even share your score or embed the quiz); Get facts about sexting, constant messaging, spying, digital disrespect and cruelty; Learn how to take control; Look at videos and forums under the Your Stories tab; and check out the $10k Challenge.
I have embedded the quiz below.
