Internet makes giving to charitable organizations easier, Cake Wrecks blogger shows how

Ching, ching, ching... We all hear the bells and see the red kettles as we go into our local stores. How many times have you reached in your pocket to feel only a debit card and no change to drop in? One popular blog, Cake Wrecks, is spending the Christmas season bringing to light the ease with which anyone can donate to a favorite cause and make a big difference for very little.

If a daily dose of hillarity via her blog isn't enough, check out Jen's book. Now available in stores and online.

Says blogger, Jen Yates, "So here's the deal: instead of buying gifts or trees or decorations this year, John and I are going to donate a minimum of $200 to a different charity or worthy cause, every day, for the next two weeks."

They requested nominations for organizations deserving of their attention and received many suggestions from blog readers (also known as 'wrecktators'). The result was a wide variety of causes including Charity: Water, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Heifer International, Child's Play, Share Our Strength, Puffy Paws Kitty Haven, Doctors without Borders, LOVE146, Habitat for Humanity, Operation Smile, Free the Slaves, and the Buckland Family Trust (for the survivors of a recent house fire). In order to make giving easier, Jen set up donations pages for several of the sites through Firstgiving.org. For others she encouraged direct donation. As of Tuesday, December 22, 2009 (with two organizations yet to be announced, the Cakewrecks page has raised over $50,000 in donations as little as $1 at a time.

This is also a great gift idea for Christmas for those of us who know someone who already has everything. Make a donation to a favorite person's favorite charity in his or her name.
