Twitter announces selective censorship program

Twitter has now joined many Internet companies in selectively censoring content based on the country of their users. So while in Milwaukee you can say and do nearly anything, if you're in a more repressive country, you will only see certain content.  To hear it from the Bird's mouth, they say: "As we continue to grow internationally, we will enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression."

Is this really the same company that was credited with allowing free information during the Arab Spring uprisings? While Twitter promises never to restrict information in the face of a repressive regime,  as Giga Om points out, this is going to only lead to accusations that the site is doing so at the behest of the US Government. What Twitter is going to do is point out these attempts to censor content, via a website Chilling Effects. Techdirt points out this may expose censorship in places people don't usually expect.

Techdirt also points out that the site already responds to DMCA complaints and obscene content by removing the content. So you can be fair that they are at least trying to push the envelope on exposing censorship, awkwardly at the same time they're enforcing it.
