In the slow march toward the end of privacy, your employer has a new tool in its attempt to hold you accountable 24-7, Social Sentry. Take the day off sick to play some Halo? You better not tweet about fragging some n00bs, lest the boss pull you in the office the next morning. Stay out too late with your work badge still attached to your keys? Let that end up on Flckr and you’re out the door on Monday. Social Sentry will allow a company to invade their employee’s privacy for 5-8 dollars a head.
The New York Times breathlessly accepts that we must let companies search through our social media to defend their brands. Of course because it’s on the Internet, this isn’t at all like following you home and peeking at what TV shows you watch, and what you talk to your friends about.
I love that the paper of record will complain every time the police even glance at the Internet with a stern look, but when the business page advertisers want to peek at your Facebook page they’re all in. Of course this economy sucks, so no one is going to throw away the chance at a good job to keep their profiles secret. This is a power grab, and a part of an increasing trend where private companies infringe the personal rights of their employees. Any Milwaukee business owners out there should show some integrity and ignore this service.
