“Become Your Own Boss in 12 Months or Less! A Month-By-Month Guide to a Business That Works” by Melinda F. Emerson is an incredibly practical resource for people wanting to start their own business.
Emerson, who is @SmallBizLady on Twitter, does NOT tell you to just quit your job and take the leap into the entrepreneurial world. Instead she provides a 12-month guide of logical steps to starting your business.
Especially helpful are the worksheets, such as the work style chart that helps you figure out, for example, how important it is to you to work from home or an office and how important it is to you to have limited or aggressive travel.
Her practical advice includes such important information as avoiding making a mistake in payroll taxes. As she says, “You can get in trouble quicker for not paying payroll taxes than you can for not paying incomes taxes.”
This new book is very valuable whether you are thinking of starting a business or are in the beginning stages of starting a business or have had your own business for some time but may not have a firm handle on everything you should be doing.
If you haven’t started a business yet, read the entire book through to see whether you are a good candidate for having your own business. If you then feel you are, return to the beginning of the book and worth month by month through Emerson’s information.
If you diligently follow her advice, you should be in a good position to launch your business.
FYI – And I definitely agree with her that learning about running your own business does NOT end here. At the conclusion of the book she says: “Make yourself a student of small business ... You need to learn all you can about the business of running a business in order to be successful.”
