Seated professional holding a card with questions marks hiding his face
I’m interested in speaking to the national annual meeting in October of a professionals’ organization on how these professionals can use social media to get out in front of potential clients.
The response I received is that it’s too late for this year as the presentations are set. Of course, I am welcome to submit a presentation proposal for next year’s meeting.
A year from now, I said, these professionals will even be further behind in learning how to use social media such as blogging, Twitter, article marketing.
But the technology is always changing on the Web was the rejoinder.
Yes and no.
Yes, the technology is always changing. But, no, the concept of using social media – in whatever form – is here to stay.
As I’ve written about before, once you learn how to effectively use social media marketing and attract followers/fans, you can migrate those social media relationships to a new site.
Imagine that overnight Twitter loses its steam while New Kid becomes the social media hot spot. Then all the Twitter people will migrate to New Kid – and if you already have an established reputation on Twitter, you’ll start on New Kid with an established reputation and a tribe of people who know you and want to be connected with you.
On the other hand, if you start brand-new on social media with the advent of New Kid, you quite possibly may be behind the eight ball – so far behind it is unlikely you can ever catch up.
If I were the organizer of the professionals’ annual meeting, I’d rethink making room for learning about social media. The organization could be doing all its members a big favor.
And if you want to learn how to use Twitter effectively, see TeachMetoTweetNow.com.
