This is really a trick question because the first step can be different for every person.
The decision is based on so many factors, including:
• How much you already know about social networking, blogging, article marketing.
• Whether you are the person tasked with starting Internet marketing for a large company or whether you are starting Internet marketing to promote your own brand, book or business.
• How much time each week you can realistically devote to Internet marketing
• What are your goals with Internet marketing: name recognition, sell products and/or services, job hunting
So here’s my answer that is for everyone:
If you want to start doing Internet marketing, you have to commit to:
• Not giving up the first time you run into an obstacle or get frustrated with an online tool you’re trying to use
• Keeping an open mind to suggestions and, where appropriate, testing them for your own needs, and then be willing to admit when something is not for you
• Learning as much as you can and then sharing this knowledge with newcomers who come after you
