Effective Web sites -- the About Us page revisited

Opportunity name tag
                                              Opportunity name tag

In the article “Create a personal About page to which Web site visitors can relate” that I wrote here a few weeks ago I said:

With the rising popularity of social media such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, Web site visitors are increasing expecting a much more personal relationship with a Web site owner than has been the norm until now.

What does this mean? It means that especially on your Web site’s About page you should try to connect with the visitor rather than only presenting information taken from your resume.

The article went on to give a Web site example and to discuss in more detail what to share with your Web site visitors.

Thus in this article I want to share that I took my own advice and got guidance from leading viral marketer Barry Plaskow on rewriting the About Us page of MillerMosaicLLC.com.

It took several back and forth emails among Yael, Barry and me until we arrived at copy that we all liked. And here is that copy:

In March of 2008 Yael K. Miller was working in the corporate communications department of a top Hollywood talent agency with clients all over the world. It was then she realized how valuable social media could be for company publicity.

At the same time Yael's mother Phyllis Zimbler Miller was promoting her self-published novel Mrs. Lieutenant. Phyllis has an M.B.A. from The Wharton School and 30 years of traditional marketing expertise helping major organizations. Because of this Phyllis knew that the old techniques of book signings, etc. didn't work for less-than-famous authors.

One day, talking to each other, Yael and Phyllis shared an EUREKA moment. They realized that they could combine their knowledge to create a powerful plan for online marketing.

And that’s when the creative sparks flew and Miller Mosaic, LLC was born.

Phyllis and Yael call this “fusion marketing” because of the transformative power of fusing traditional marketing principles with modern social media.

Now Miller Mosaic has served small businesses and entrepreneurs, helping them to effectively position themselves online through integrated call-to-action websites, blogging, social media, and other Internet marketing strategies.

Today the About Us page copy of your Web site is very important because people expect to learn more about who is behind a Web site than just what title you have in your company.  And as what you include on your About Us page can create opportunities, it’s worth putting focused time and effort into writing this copy.

On September 1st www.WeTeachWebMarketing.com will feature the monthly conversation on the topic of using Twitter effectively to promote your business. If you sign up today you’ll have access to the August material as well as the September material – and that’s a good deal!
