I had tentatively set up a consulting date with a potential client who wanted help marketing his nonfiction book. Yet something nagged at me – I felt he didn’t understand what it takes to launch a book marketing campaign.
In order to make sure he and I were on the same page, I emailed him that a book marketing campaign is NOT an overnight project. He had to be willing to invest his time and effort over a long period of time.
His response: He didn’t know it was going to involve constant work and a lot of time. And he couldn’t commit to this now.
(One wonders why he wrote a book if he didn’t have the time to promote it. Oh, well, he is obviously not my ideal client. See my Examiner article “Who is the ideal client for your Internet business?”)
Let me make this very clear: Unless you are famous or incredibly lucky (such as having a famous author repeatedly insist that all her fans buy your book), you need to commit your time and your effort (or the time and effort of a consultant or virtual assistant or employee) to conducting a well-planned Internet marketing campaign.
There are so many books, products, services on the Internet all clamoring for our attention. (I actually saw a website for an upcoming book that trumpeted: “The best book you’ll ever read!”) You need to break through this “noise” by presenting your Unique Selling Proposition (“This book provides step-by-step instructions to solve the problem of …”) as part of an overall strategic marketing plan to share valuable information with your potential customers/clientele.
Remember the saying “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.” That saying is still true today. And while, thanks to the Internet, you do not need buckets of money to conduct an online marketing campaign, you do need to have yourself or someone on your team commit time and effort over the long haul.
