Computerworld UK recently cited Microsoft as saying that two Linux Distrubutions as being threats, or rather competitors; Red Hat and Canonical. This goes against previous reports of Microsoft concluding that only its Server Based OS and Tools would face competition from Linux. Canonical maintains the Ubuntu distrobution. Under the "Competition" header of the Filing of the 10-K form to the SEC, it clearly states that:
Client faces strong competition from well-established companies with differing approaches to the PC market. Competing commercial software products, including variants of Unix, are supplied by competitors such as Apple, Canonical, and Red Hat
This is the break through that Linux founding developer Linus Torvalds may have dreamt of when he created what some have called the greatest desktop OS that money can not buy. Linux has long been a threat, just not acknoledged. When you look at the facts, you can see for yourself.
This is also a dream that author Keith Curtis had when he wrote the book, After The Software Wars. In the book, he quoted Linus Torvalds as saying "Really, I'm not out to destroy Microsoft. That would just be a completely unintentional side effect". (in 2003)

It will be interesting to see how this turns out, especially with Ubuntu.
