The city of Valencia, Spain is pulling out all the stops starting this Friday for the 33rd America's Cup. From fireworks to paella for 5000, live coverage of the races which start on Monday the 8th, and a worldwide television audience of two billion, yes that billion, Here's the official announcement from turisvalencia.com.
The 33rd America’s Cup, the oldest maritime event in the world, will be held in Valencia from the 8th February 2010. However, a timetable of great events leading up to this date will ensure the build up of a unique sporting and cosmopolitan atmosphere around the city several days before. On February 5th, Valencia hosts a welcome party for everyone involved in the America’s Cup, while the official dinner will be held on the 6th February. The opening ceremony will take place the following day, on the 7th of February, where spectators will be able to feast on a giant paella for 5,000 people, cooked to raise money for the Haiti Earthquake. Spectators will also be able to enjoy the spectacular Mascletá de Caballer, a traditional Valencian firework display.
Out on the water, the Swiss boat Alinghi and the American BMW Oracle will be fighting for victory from their lavish 27.5 metre multihulls, complete with 30 metre masts and fitted out with the latest available technology. Sailing lovers will be able to enjoy the action and soak up the atmosphere from the port docks, where the catamarans will enter and leave the harbour for each race. The return of the America’s Cup to Valencia is another sparkling success for the city in its quest to attract world class sporting events, following the arrival of the European Formula One Grand Prix and the Valencia Open 500, an ATP Tour tennis tournament, in the last few years. The competition will have an estimated worldwide television audience of two billion, and all the action and replays of the races can be followed free of charge through http://33rd.americascup.com.
