In an effort to make Kenya a more economically attractive option for families, the country's Ministry of Tourism has reduced entry visa fees by 50 percent between now and the end of 2010. For adults, a visa will now cost $25 rather than $50. Children under 16 will no longer have to have a visa to enter Kenya. For a family of four, this move therefore represents savings of $150.
According to the travel and tourism industry website Travel Mole, the Kenyan Minister of Tourism, Najib Balala, explained the incentives package as follows:
"With beautiful beaches and thrilling safaris, Kenya has a lot to offer families. This scheme will help to keep costs down for all when planning a trip to our diverse country and particularly benefit those traveling with children."
Kenya's world-famous wildlife, spectacular scenery, and fascinating cultures make it one of Africa's most popular destinations. Tourism suffered during the political unrest of late 2007 and early 2008, but as peace returned, the industry has been recovering. The reduced visa fees were announced last month at an international tourism conference in Berlin.
