The National Hurricane Center in Miami reported late Monday that Hurricane Danielle is continuing to gather strength and could become a major hurricane by late Tuesday.
The storm is still far away from any inhabited areas, but forecast models show it could threaten the popular tourist island of Bermuda by the end of the week.
At 10 p.m. CDT, the center of Danielle was located 1,205 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, which include the islands of Barbados, Martinique, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent. None of these islands are expected to be in the path of the hurricane, however, as forecasters expect it to turn toward the northwest by late Tuesday.
Danielle was packing maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. Hurricane force winds extended 25 miles out from the center of the storm.
The hurricane was moving to the west-northwest at 20 mph. If it were to continue on its present path instead of turning as forecasters anticipate, it could threaten the Bahamas and Florida in a few days.
