Things to do in Medellin, Colombia with kids

Botero
Plaza Botero in front of Museo de Antioquia is filled with statues.

So, you are headed to Colombia with your kids and are wondering what to do with them.  Cartagena has lots of interesting things on the to-do list like mud volcanoes and ancient forts with underground tunnels.  But Medellin?  All the guide book lists for Medellin is museums – and if your kids are like mine, the museum circuit won’t last long.

Never fear – there are actually quite a few places of interest for kids in Medellin.  All of  them are easy to find and make for a wonderful day for the family.

Parque Explora – an enormous hands-on science museum with lots of activities to keep your little ones busy for hours on end.  There are – in addition to the open air fun stuff on the ground floor – four rooms filled with science experiments.  You can choose to explore biology, physics, geology, or technology.  You’ll also find an aquarium filled with fishes from the Amazon. Although all the signs are written in Spanish, there are a number of assistants working in the rooms who speak a bit of English and can help explain the various experiments.

To get there:  Take the metro to the Universidad station.  Parque Explora is right there at the exit.  The museum is open 7 days a week and has varying levels of admission prices (the most basic is $4, while the most inclusive is $8).

Parque Norte – an amusement park which will amuse children for a day.  Although the park cannot be compared to Disneyland or Six Flags, kids will enjoy a day of riding bumper cars, roller coasters, and log rides.

To get there:  Take the metro to the Universidad station.  Parque Norte is immediately across the street from Parque Explora.  The park is open 7 days a week and has varying levels of admission prices ($4 for only a few rides up to $11 for as many rides as they want)

Parque de los Aguas Waterpark – A delightful waterpark just outside the city with lots of slides and toys.

To get there:  Take the metro to the Niquia station – as far north as the system goes.  From there, get a local bus 15 minutes north to the water park.  Entrance fees are $5/adult, $2.50/child.

Plaza Botero & Museo de Antioquia - a large plaza filled with statues by Botero, the famous Colombian artist.  The plaza is right in front of the Museo de Antioquia, which makes for an easy day of sight seeing.

To get there:  Take the metro to the Berrio station.  The plaza and museum are right there when you get off.

Good advice. I am leaving for Colombia next month, and I was worried about my children. I have a 4 year old, twin five year olds, a 7 year old, triplet 12 year olds who bicker every minute about what to do, and I am pregnant with another set of twins. My life is not easy, and a place where relaxation can be on my mind is great. Thank-you!
