Ah...a new year is on the horizon, and with it, a new season of pret-a-porter fashion. Trends for 2010 were actually established by the spring/summer 2010 shows back in September, but really, who can even remember that far back? It's hard enough keeping track of the season we're in, I agree. So here's a refresher on trends you can expect to see emerge even before the snow and ice have melted for the last time.

Top 10 style trends for 2010
- Dresses. Long, short, and in between. Dresses were a staple in nearly all the shows, and why not? Dresses make dressing easy. Throw one on, add accessories and shoes, and you're done.
- Neutrals + Brights. Think drab olive green coupled with fuschia, light grey paired with orange. In fact, orange and light grey were everywhere in the shows, so expect to see them this spring.
- Geometric and abstract prints. The bigger, the bolder, the better...especially on a short dress. Printed dresses that fall just above the knee or shorter are the new statement piece.
- Military. Military details—from epaulets, to military-style jackets and shades of khaki and olive—were threaded throughout many shows.
- Futuristic details. Cut outs, asymmetry, clean lines, and metal transformed simple sheaths into chic—and stark—21st century ensembles. Expect to see white, black, and grey combined with bold silver accents this spring.
- Fetish elements. Elements of fetish dressing, like bondage and hardware, were seen in several shows. Body-conscious dresses woven with straps and bindings, and sky-high, platform sandals and booties will continue to be all the rage.
- Leather. Yes, leather for spring. Leather jackets, pants, and minidresses popped up in several spring/summer 2010 collections—but don't even think about wearing any black leather. Abbreviated pieces are being produced in nude, camel, white, and pastels, which makes them perfect for transitional weather.
- Bib/statement necklaces. Necklaces that practically double as breastplates/chainmail are still hot, whether they're stone encrustred, be-ribboned, laden with hardware, or all of the above. Roland Mouret's show exemplifies this trend, and rather successfully, I might add.
- Outrageous footwear. As I mentioned above, sky-high (scary-high) platforms and heels will be everywhere. The spring 2010 Versace show is a great example of the direction of future footwear. Forget about practicality. Shoes next year are exaggerated hybrids in the form of platform gladiator sandals, shooties, booties, and the like. Not for the faint-of-heart...or ankle.
- Trench coats. This perennial favorite has been reworked for next year, and the result is more exciting than ever. Burberry's line of mini-trenches will likely inspire knockoffs the world over. Philip Lim did a sensational red patent trench as well. Expect the trench to show up in every color, length, and fabrication. If you haven't invested in a trench yet, 2010 is the year to do it.
