    Ring Magazine's number four
pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Nonito "Filipino Flash" Donaire (24-1) defended his interim World Boxing Association (WBA) super flyweight belt via an eighth round TKO over Mexico's Hernan Marquez (27-2) on Saturday, July 10, 2010 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Right before his bout with the Mexican, Donaire posted confidently on his Facebook page:

Alright guys, fight times around the corner. Great camp, great team, God in my corner...Nothing's gna stop me . . .

Breaking News:   Juan Manuel Lopez stops Bernabe Concepcion in Round 2

The California-based Filipino-American used his trademark movement and swift jabs in order to press the action and befuddle Hernan Marquez.  In the eighth, Marquez's corner threw in the towel.

   Donaire said after the fight:

You know, I wanted some more rounds. I knew that I could figure him out right away if I returned to my regular right-handed style. But I wanted to do my lefty style.

I really practiced for it, and everybody believed in me. I was very confident going in there. But he came out really tough. I couldn't counter him the way that I had done against other guys. So I took some beating, but I think that I needed that.

Donaire dropped Marquez with a left hook and a left uppercut in the fifth and eighth rounds of a scheduled twelve round fight.

The bout was stopped at 2:59 of the eighth round  on the undercard of the night's main event: Juan Manuel Lopez (29-0) vs Bernabe Concepcion (28-4).  [Lopez won by TKO in the second round against the MP Promotions-led Concepcion.]

On his fighting style, the 27-year old "Filipino Flash" commented:

I definitely like my left hand side. I feel so much more power on my left hand side, but you haven't seen it yet.  It's just a matter of time where you are going to see a Pernell Whitaker or a Marvelous Marvin Hagler with that style. That's what I want to do.

I knew that I could make him miss, because he ducks down a lot. And every time that I made him miss, I was going throw an uppercut, and that's what landed every time.  Every time that he missed, he left himself open for an uppercut. And I knew that if I turned to the right hand, that I would get him right away.

Nonito Donaire has said that this would be his final fight at 115 pounds.  It appeared that the Filipino-American had trouble making weight for his bout with Marquez.

Donaire will now likely want to fight Fernando Montiel (41-2) at 118 pounds.  Montiel is considered the The Ring’s number one--rated bantamweight.

The Ring Magazine considers the top five pound-for-pound fighters as follows:

1.  Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2) - Philippines

2.  Floyd Mayweather, Jr (41-0) - USA

3.  Juan Manuel Marquez (50-5-1) - Mexico

4.  Nonito Donaire (24-1) - Philippines

5.  Shane Mosley (46-6) - USA

Nonito. C'mon man. Everybody knows you're a great multi-dimensional fighter already. You're versatile. But what is up with the converting southpaw nonsense? JUST STICK WITH THE CONVENTIONAL STANCE BROTHAH! You can't experiment against Montiel.

I'm sure Vic Darchinyan and Gary Shaw will find all the excuses in the world to avoid Nonito from now on.

Well, it's the wisest thing to do by Gary Shaw to save whatever is left on Darchinyan's career.

I think that's the part of Nonito's Gameplan... He want to confuse his opponent by switching with different stands...

Nonito need not be crucified for being vocal as far as what he can do. We will only be critical if he is already disrespecting the personality of his opponent just like what gayfloyd is doing. To be true he has all the making of a great fighter and is capable of wrecking havoc in the higher weights. I would love to see him move up and one day face Juan Ma lopez, but first he has to clear the path in going there which is quite achievable.

I can't understand why Nonito has to experiment a left-handed stance. We saw what happened to him the first four rounds; he got tagged many times! He got a black eye and a "bokol" below his left eye. It will be very dangerous for him to do such an experiment with Montiel. Stick to what proved to be the best - the right-handed stance and carry on the mission to fill in the void when Pacquiao retires.

For those of you guys who called Nonito as "mayabang", you sure don't know much about Fil-Am's Way. Fil-am, like US regular guys, loves to give credit for what ever accomplishment the'd made. They dont hide the way they feel about themselves. They love to express "pride" with their own words. And to me, there is nothing wrong with that as long as he was saying the real thing. Now, manny is alright the way he is. He can't really talk! I bet, nung nanligaw sya kay jingki, fame and money did the talking. kung niligawan nga nya....baka si jingky pa nga ang nanligaw eh...

Purong Pinoy, Donaire grew up here in the US. Just like my children when they were in their elementary school, they were taught to express what's in their mind. Many kids here call their parents by their names which is considered a disrespect in the Phils...but not here in the US.
Donaire is the best fighter we have that can carry the torch when Manny retires and we should support him.
Donaire, pls don't change your style. I love your left counter hook that KO'd Vic D which you can do best with your right handed stance.

There's nothing wrong with Donaire being a confident fighter. He's just that good, and it's unfair for the kid to be called "mayabang", by some who don't know what they are talking about. Manood na lang kayo, huwag nang namimintas, tulad ninyo'y mga kalawang. Instead of making negative comments, why not just give him your full support. After all he's a full blooded Filipino!!!
