May 19, 2010 - Two teenaged girls, found shackled and naked in a secret underground chamber where they were held by a man for nearly a year, managed to smuggle out a note and have been rescued.
The girls are 16 and 19 and were found Friday. They were naked except for the shackles on their feet.
The Beijing News reported that the girls had been held captive in a secret lair built by a man under his home in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province in central China.
There were no details yet on the 16-year-old girl, but the 19-year-old girl’s home is just 200 meters (yards) from where she was held. She went missing in July of last year.
The man who is suspected of holding the girls captive is Zeng Xiangbao, 39, the report said.
Xiangbao was detained by police a week before the girls were found on an unrelated rape charge, but the report made no mention of whether the captive girls had been raped.
With Xiangbao held on a rape charge the girls would have likely starved to death had it not been for a nearby business owner who found a piece of paper with a plea for help, a phone number, and a map drawn on it, according to the report.
The man who found the note called the number which belonged to the 19-year-old’s father identified by his surname Zhou. Police were contacted.
The girls had smuggled out notes before, usually hidden in the rubbish of the instant noodles that they were fed by Xiangbao.
Police are investigating the case which made no mention of any charges filed against Xiangbao.
This comes at the same time as Ma Yaoha, a 53-year old college professor, and 21 others were accused of "group licentiousness" and brought to trial. Ma is the only one who pleaded not guilty, and is being tried today.
The individuals accused involved themselves in group sex parties and orgies. It is a major shift in how sexuality is viewed in Beijing compared to a generation ago when public hand-holding and kissing were unheard.
Now studies show 60 to 70 percent of Chinese have had sex before marriage, up from 15 percent in 1989.
"In the past, any sex activity outside marriage was unacceptable among people and could be punished," said Li, a member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
According to the China Daily, in the early 1980s a woman was sentenced to death for participating in secret dance parties and the charge of “hooliganism,” was the catchall phrase used to criminalize everything from premarital sex to dancing with members of the other sex and listening to Western music.

Comments
I like how the past comments are about the author of this article instead of about how F-ed up it is to have girls chained up in your basement. The last 5 paragraphs could possibly relate to how a super repressive system could potentially cause a rise in sexual related crimes like the one mentioned at the beginning. And for the picture, dancingrain, you're an idiot. Your proposal is offensive to me and I didn't even write the article.
