June 30, 2010 - Six people died and several others were injured following an accident on a ride at a Chinese amusement park, Chinese media agencies reported Tuesday.
The passengers were on a simulated rocket ride. Survivors of the ride said they smelled burning electronics with a sudden loss of power, followed by the deadly accident at the Overseas Chinese Town East facility in Shenzhen, witnesses told Xinhua news agency.
According to the Hong Kong-based Ming Pao newspaper, one of the 11 capsules on the "Space Journey" ride became detached and slammed into others. This lead to the six deaths and at least 10 others who were injured.
The only thing government officials would say was the exact cause of the accident is under investigation.
The area surrounding the ride will be closed Wednesday, they said.
The park is popular with Hong Kong residents traveling to the mainland.
