Edward Dennis is an artist who works in several mediums including oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, graphite, pen and ink, airbrush, digital, colored pencil, and pastel. He doesn’t see himself as an artist that displays work in galleries but more of a commercial artist. He says, “I know many people are still unaware of what digital is and on my link I show the process and you'll find with a program such as Corel Painter 11 it is extremely similar to the traditional process. As a matter of fact, I paint using the watercolor and oil brushes in Painter 11 just the same way I would traditionally.”
Art education
Through elementary and high school his parents enrolled him in private art classes. Dennis then went on to Glendale Community College. He says, “I learned a lot about art and myself at GCC, but I still wasn't sure what I wanted to do.” He was accepted to an art school in California, but wanted to stay in Arizona so he enrolled at Arizona State University. He says he’s still unaware if he made the right decision. Even though he’s taken many classes, most of what he knows is from books and experimentation. Feeling that an art degree is one-dimensional, he has changed his major. He is currently at ASU West and has a year and a half left until he gets his bachelors in Elementary Education.
His inspirations
Dennis is inspired by other artist and what they've accomplished and he strives to do what they have done. His favorite artists have written and illustrated books and he would like to share his art with others in that manner. He has also been inspired by teachers in both high school and college, including Darlene Goto at GCC.
Dennis was born in Phoenix and currently lives in Peoria. He has won more than 20 awards here in AZ, nationally, and internationally. Dennis has also had his work published and has received numerous scholarships. He is currently working on several comic books, a children’s book, U.S. Army Watercolor Prints, and commissions.
