Moses Mabhid Stadium
The 2010 World Cup has created a frenzy with spectators anxiously waiting to cheer on their teams. As June 11th quickly approaches, not only will we be introduced to the games, but also, a sustainable stadium.
The goal of the Moses Mabhid Stadium is to become a South African landmark that blends in with the natural environment without disturbing the inspiring views of the country. The designers of GMP Architeklen have created a spectacular new structure built with materials from the previous stadium (over 30,000 cubic metres). "Water conservation and energy efficiency were also top priorities, as was natural ventilation and daylighting. The stadium boasts an energy-efficient heating and cooling system and is capable of collecting rainwater (Inhabitat)." The roof provides a sculptural quality to the stadium boasting great design and efficiency. The PTFE coating allows natural daylight while protecting spectators from the elements.
Elevated on a platform, spectators will also enjoy breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean. A cable car will provide transportation both to and from the Skydeck for extra enjoyment. The Moses Mabhid Stadium will be a wonderful addition both to South Africa and the world of architecture and design.
