In response to an article I wrote on color trends for 2009, Deborah Main wrote me an email with some comments and questions on the topic. Her message turned out to a stroke of good fortune for me because it caused the discovery of her website, where I was taken aback by such an impressive array of amazing decorative pillows. As a major fan of fabrics and trims myself, I was instantly mesmerized by the materials incorporated in her designs. Moreover, I found that her choice of materials could only be eclipsed by the variety, depth, and clarity of the design perspectives radiating throughout her collections. It was obvious to me from the get-go that Deborah takes special care to include hand-picked vintage trims, jewelry pieces, and fabrics that give her pieces an extraordinary sense of personality and character. On the less obvious and tangible side of things, though, I was even more struck by her ability to manifest so many different moods of culture, society, and the decorative arts through her creations. She doesn't present us with merely a well-constructed, classically romantic grouping of pillows. She balances the fanciful aspects of pieces that suggest a return to the 19th century or a night in a Venetian Gondola with ones that use vintage scarves expressing an elusive, long-gone socio-cultural moment of the American 50's or 60's, such as her Silver & Blue Silk with Rhinestone Brooch (pictured at bottom middle; note to self: Rent Mad Men again tonight). And when Deborah is really having fun, she gives you a piece that is dangerously perched on the edge of kitsch, such as her Vintage Bullfighter on a Mexico Souvenir Scarf (bottom right). It has certainly been fun for me to discover these fantastic collections. To see more of her work or to purchase pieces online, go to www.deborahmaindesigns.com. Deborah also takes custom orders for those who need a specific look. She is based in Austin but sells to showrooms in Dallas and Toronto.
