Affordable kitchen makeover - wallpaper backsplash

Like a lot of home owners, DIY projects are a fact of life; and if you’re not Bob Vila, they are also intimidating. My husband and I removed our kitchen’s outdated, tile backsplash when we first moved in; a year and a half later it has yet to be replaced.

The expense, time and skill required to install a new tile backsplash bumped the project further down our ‘to do’ list; but while shopping for wallpaper for our living room, I realized I could carry the wallpaper pattern I chose, straight into the kitchen!

While there are various types of vinyl and treated papers made especially for high moisture areas like kitchens and bathrooms, I didn’t want a vinyl paper for my living room. I was determined to keep cohesiveness between the rooms and wanted to achieve it through the wall covering. The solution was to cover the wallpaper in the kitchen most susceptible to food and water stains with a layer of Plexiglass.

I found that by sticking with traditional, untreated papers and protecting them in this manner offers you the most bang for your buck. The range of styles is endless, as is the quality of paper to choose from. Choosing a high end, ornate paper has huge impact, but can still be more cost effective than stone or tile and easier to install.
