Do you wonder how you can add color to your room and know that it will look great the first time?   Do you wonder what rules the decorator or designer uses to correctly add color to the room so it looks sensational?  There are several guidelines that work when choosing colors and placing colors in your home.

Decorators and Designers like to use the 60/30/10 rule when choosing and placing color.  This is a ratio that is visually balanced for the human eye.  The main color makes up sixty percent of the room, for example, the walls.  The thirty percent is the next prominent color in the room, usually made up of the furniture or upholstery color.  The remaining ten percent is the accent color.

Keep in mind that darker values of color work well for the floor because it psychologically relates to the ground.  Use medium values of color for the walls because psychologically they relate to scenery.  That leaves the lightest value for the ceiling because it relates psychologically to the sky. If you divide your colors by value from dark to light as you decorate the room from floor to ceiling, you will have a winning combination.

Another way to help you choose a color scheme is by using what you already have in the room. Look at the largest pattern or object in the room first and choose colors from it.  It could be the draperies or the couch upholstery fabric, a large area rug or a piece of artwork.  This will tie your colors that you are choosing in with what you already have and you will have a winning combination.

Use the 60/30/10 ratio, the psychological aspects for color placement and incorporate colors that you existing to create your winning color ccombination.  If you utilize these guidelines you are sure to have a winning color combination.
