States with the largest declines in average car insurance quotes in November 2009 cannot point to seat belt usage as a major factor for those cost savings.
According to Insurance.com’s Rate Watch, Nebraskans experienced the largest drop in average yearly car insurance premiums down 12.7% to $1,364. Yet Nebraskan motorists placed 31st among U.S. states for wearing seat belts.
In second place with a 9% decrease was Vermont, where automobilists also enjoyed the lowest average auto insurance quote of $1,188 for all of America. Vermont drivers buckle up an average 87.3%, better than the U.S. national average of 83% but well behind Michigan’s leading 97.2% seat belt usage rate.
The average car insurance quote for Michigan last month was $2,065 – up 3.4% from October 2009.
Below are statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration based on percentage of seat belt users for the 5 states combined with the largest declines in average auto insurance rates.
- Nebraska … $1,364 annual premium down 12.7% (82.6% seat belt usage)
- Vermont … $1,188 down 9% (87.3% seat belt usage)
- Idaho … $1,243 down 6.4% (76.9% seat belt usage)
- West Virginia … $1,961 down 5.6% (89.5% seat belt usage)
- North Dakota … $1,512 down 4.4% (81.6% seat belt usage)
Idaho has the 40th lowest rate for wearing seat belts, but garnered the second-lowest average auto insurance premium of $1,243 this past November.
