Kate Winslet won the coveted Best Actress Academy Award last night for her role in "The Reader" and joked about the speech she'd made up in her mind from when she was a young girl growing up in Reading. "I'd be lying if I hadn't made a version of this speech in the bathroom and this would have been the shampoo bottle." Lifting the heavy statue she said, "Well it's not a shampoo bottle now." Kate is recognized as one of the finest actresses of her generation and in generous recognition of another great actress, Meryl Streep, who was up to her 15th nomination, Kate said, "I think we all can't believe we're in a category with Meryl Streep at all. I'm sorry Meryl but you have to just suck that up." Meryl was nominated for her role as a Catholic nun in "Doubt."
In the post Oscar press conference, a journalist asked her to comment about the British press focusing on her emotional acceptance speech at the Golden Globes and quickly snapped back, "I really don't care. And, quite honestly, it makes me very sad that my own country can't be pleased for the successes of their own kind in the way that America really seems to be able to be." A British journalist spoke next and reassured her that Britain did love her.
