One of the most frequent questions I’m asked, as an infidelity expert who has been researching infidelity for over 17 years, is "How can I keep him from cheating on me?"

There Are No Guarantees

The sad reality is that while there are many books and articles that claim to help a woman affair-proof her marriage or relationship, there is nothing you can do to guarantee 100% that your husband or boyfriend will never cheat.

Infidelity can happen to anyone, at anytime. No one is immune.

But understanding some of the reasons why men cheat will give you insight into some of the reasons your husband or boyfriend might have an affair, and what you can do about it.

Why Men Cheat, and Precautions You Can Take

Here are some of the common reasons why men cheat, and some precautions you can take.

Thinking he can get away with it –Let him know that you’ve educated yourself about infidelity and that you know how to spot both the subtle and the obvious signs of infidelity. A close female friendship gets out of hand. – It’s common for a man to have an affair with someone who started out as a good friend. The two of you should set ground rules for what is and isn’t acceptable for friendships with members of the opposite sex.

A man with good intentions can inadvertently drawn into infidelity because he didn’t realize he was in the danger zone. – There are some common everyday situations that can lead to infidelity. Thinking that if he gets caught, you’ll automatically forgive him - With so much news about wives of cheating politicians standing by their man, he’s bound to think that if he gets caught cheating, you’ll give him a second chance. His close friends are cheating. - Close friends who are cheating on their mates might pressure him into doing the same thing. Encourage him to spend less time with cheating friends. Make friends, and hang out with couples who believe in being faithful to their mates.

Underestimating the harm an emotional affair, or an internet affair can do. Most men don’t realize that non-sexual forms of infidelity lead to sexual infidelity. The belief that you won’t leave him even if he cheats– Let him know up front that infidelity is a deal breaker, and there will be serious consequences if he cheats.

The belief that it’s normal for a man to cheat– If he comes from a family where his father, uncles and other male role models cheated on their mates, or comes from a culture where it’s common for a man to have a mistress, he may feel that infidelity is okay. Let him know that it’s not normal for men on their mates, and that infidelity is something you won’t accept.

Other Precautions That May Keep Him From Cheating on You
