Over 7.3 million people have been diagnosed with infertility in the U.S. A woman's peak fertility occurs in her early 20s and as a woman ages beyond 35 the likelihood of getting pregnant drops to less than 10% per month. With statistics such as these, it is virtually impossible for you or someone you know not to have been affected by this issue.

National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW) begins April 24th. Organized by Resolve, the National Infertility Association, NIAW is a movement to raise awareness about the disease of infertility. Founded in 1974 by nurses, Resolve is the only non-profit organization with a nationwide network of chapters mandated to promote reproductive health and to ensure equal access to all family building options for men and women experiencing infertility.

Across the U.S., Resolve local affiliates provide free support groups and educational programs as well as opportunities to meet and connect with others experiencing infertility. Mari Waldron, the San Diego Chapter Affiliate Leader, describes Resolve as an invaluable resource to those struggling to build a family. “Resolve is so important when experiencing infertility. You can meet others who are also struggling to start their families and it helps you realize you are not alone. The support groups and events connect you with others who will never judge you or tell you to just relax or adopt or something equally dismissive to what you are dealing with.”

For many people, coping with infertility can be a stressful and isolating experience. While each month brings the excitement of a new possibility, it also carries the undeniable proof of ones failure. This emotional roller coaster makes it impossible to let go mentally when the key component of treatment requires the daily monitoring of ones body. It is crucial to remember to take the time to care for the mental well being of those experiencing infertility.

The goal of NIAW is to educate others on what it is like to experience infertility. Sadly, 7.3 million Americans don’t need a dedicated week to do so. Help raise awareness by talking with others about what can be done to help alleviate the stress of infertility. Whether it’s asking for or offering emotional support, it all can make a difference.

Visit the Southwest Region of Resolve Website to learn more about the free programs and services available to those suffering from infertility.

Wonderful quote by Ms. Waldron - especially the part about feeling dismissive.

    Erin,

I have friends who have been declared infertile and then made the big jump to pursue adoption...only to have that be a roller coaster ride that all too sadly turned negative on their first attempt. The mom changed her mind at the last second. Double heart break. How do you keep going when every attempt has the potential to chew you up and spit you out?
