There’s only a few days left before the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics marks its end, but the city’s in no shortage of events to celebrate the Olympics’ culmination. One of the few perks in being in the center of all these celebrations is being able to see the many Canadian indie acts that are performing live in the different Olympic celebration sites throughout the area – and the best of all, they’re for free.
If you haven’t gotten the chance to attend, there are still three more days of celebrations left and more bands you can check out. But if you’re undecided on who to see and where to go, here are three acts that you definitely won’t want to miss this coming weekend:
You Say Party! We Say Die!
February 27 – 8:00 pm @ Holland Park
This Abbotsford / Vancouver band is an act that you’ll certainly want to keep tabs on. They’ve reached the top of the charts on CBC Radio 3 and for good reason - You Say Party! We Say Die! produces high energy dance pop reminiscent of 80’s female electropop songs and new wave music, that’s hard not to fall in love with. This is one band whose infectious beats won’t fail to keep you moving.
Tokyo Police Club
February 26 – 9:45 pm @ Richmond Ozone / February 27 – 9:00 pm @ Holland Park
These boys from Newmarket, Ontario have come a long way from playing music for fun in their own basement. When they launched their first EP, A Lesson in Crime in 2006, it became well received by fans and critics alike and generated quite a buzz – making them the indie music scene’s ‘it’ band at that time. Since then, they’ve gotten 2 EPs and one full album under their belt (with a second one to be released in May) as well as a Juno nomination for their 2008 album Elephant Shell. They churn out high energy post-punk songs with dancey hooks – which will feel especially good when you’ve got that Olympic victory high going on.
Wintersleep
February 27 – 10:00 pm @ Holland Park
It says a lot for a band when they get handpicked by Paul McCartney to open for one of his concerts – and this is what exactly happened to Nova Scotia’s Wintersleep. On top of that, they’ve already got a Juno win in 2008 for New Group of the Year and yet another album waiting to be released this spring. A band that rocks out with moving songs who have the unique ability to touch mind and heart at the same time, Wintersleep is one band that truly is, best experienced live.
