Sexy melodic rock from L'Avventura

L'Avventura's'Your Star Was Shining'

L'Avventura's debut album 'Your Star Was Shining' is a high quality collection of love songs for a plethora of lovely women. The group started as two street buskers in London, but over the years has grown into a seven piece ensemble capable of knock your socks off rock or soft, romantic tunes on acoustic guitar.

Their album is impressive in the way it engages the listener's all five senses to tell a story. Where typical rock songs paint love of beautiful women in broad brush strokes, L'Avventura focuses on the details. In "Swan Dive" (the best track on the album), a lyric describing an attractive girl runs 'With your skin like that/ Like some nectarine/ And your lips / Sweetened with nicotine.' Senses are engaged on multiple levels in this way throughout the album.

Other songs display the band's sense of humor. In 'Ms. Yugoslavia' singer Jeff Davis croons 'Ms. Yugoslavia / At first I watched you from afar / In your bulletproof dress / How could I not be impressed.'

The same song also displays the group's ability to reference the work of other bands. Late in Ms. Yugoslavia a lyric runs 'Baby, you can drive my car / In your bulletproof vest / Beep Beep / Beep Beep / YES!' If the lyric doesn't cue you, the sudden switch to a Beatlesque musical interlude will.

Beyond the lyrics, 'Your Star Was Shining' is a solid, grooving rock album from beginning to end. Though it has a decidedly mellow feel it keeps you on the edge of your seat with the simple beauty of its sound, its detailed lyrics, and its minimalist vocal style.
