Indie drumming sensation of the future?
This Saturday, girls of all ages will be rocking out on guitar at The Bottom of the Hill. As part of the Bay Area Girl's Rock Camp, each girl will play their own original songs. The show will be followed by a screening of the 'Girls Rock!' documentary, which takes an inside look at what making music means to girls everywhere.
We've come a long way since the days where 'I'm with the band' meant a girl was probably dating one of the musicians. It's no longer suspect whether girls can make music or not - especially when it comes to playing the guitar. While it's often suggested that girls may not be able to handle a guitar as well as guys, musicians like 15 year old prodigy Desiree Bassett prove that girls can do just as well if not better.
Performers like Kaki King take it further, demonstrating that women can make music using instruments in unique, non-traditional ways. For example King often uses her entire guitar as a percussion instrument.
With role models like these two, maybe this is why young women are now taking such a widespread interest in making music. Who knows what the future holds in store for these girls? Perhaps if you attend 'Girls Rock' you will not just be looking at little girls with guitars - you'll be staring in the face of the next generation of indie rock stars. If you're interested in attending the event, please check the Must See Music Calendar for details.
