Last Friday, I went to the Bazaar Cafe in the Richmond because my former roommate Branden Kolarik was playing a show there. I came late so I ended up missing Branden's first set, but I was there in time to see Bart Vogel play. All I can say is oh my God, it was an amazing performance. I had never heard of him before last Friday, but I couldn't help but be memorized by his music. Vogel is about a 50-year-old man who has been playing the guitar for most of his life, and his performance represented a lifetime of constant work. The lyrics were captiviating (including a different take on Don't Worry Be Happy), and he even slapped his palm against his guitar. I love it when musicians do that: using the physical wood as an instrument, not just the strings. His son played backup guitar next to him, and it was nice to see the family dyanamic. Very enjoyable, I'm glad I went.
