So it's late in the afternoon and you are getting on the light rail. You enter into the train, take a seat, and prepare to flip on your MP3 player. Suddenly, it occurs to you that something isn't right. Looking up from your music player, you see that there are several people sitting near you holding various acoustic instruments. Before this even has time to register, the door closes, the train proceeds, and the musicians begin to play. The other passengers on the train are also drawn away from their personal distractions by the music, and for the course of at least one song something odd happens; everyone in the train car is united in the same activity.
Sounds surreal doesn't it? But scenes similar to this are playing out every week thanks to The Train Tracks. A project put together by Kimber Lanning (Silverplatter), Tray Goodman (Inside Creative Minds), Marty McNeill (Metro Light Rail), and the Phoenix Art Museum; The Train Tracks is a unique way to promote both local musicians and Phoenix's newest form of public transportation. Besides being a good time for everyone involved, there is also a contest involved. Over on The Train Tracks website you can watch videos of the performances as well as vote on your favorites. At the end of every quarter the most popular bands are gathered to play at the Phoenix Art Museum. And at the end of the year the grand champion will get to play at next year's Tempe Music Festival.
So ditch your car, get on the light rail, and catch some great music from the valley's finest! Performances generally occur on Sundays and Mondays. If interested, be sure to register on The Train Tracks mailing list to receive periodic updates about performances, voting results, and other related info.
