Vampire Weekend have a new song making the rounds on YouTube. The song is called “White Sky” and should be included on a later release some time in Fall 2009. However, if you look on YouTube you will hear two different versions of the song. I’ve gone ahead and saved you some time and have linked the videos at the bottom.
When VW first started playing this song live it was fast and erratic, and almost in the same grain as songs like “A-Punk” or “Campus.” Since then it has evolved and VW are playing it as a slow, mellow tune with a full orchestral sound like “M79” or “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa.” The song has equal parts groove in the bass line, far reaching vocals from Ezra Koenig, and a nice build to the chorus.
Whichever version makes it to the final cut won’t matter since they both sound superb and are incredibly catchy. I’ve grown to like the slower version better probably because I have it on my iPod, but I'm curious to hear what other VW fans think of the song. Note: The new version linked below does not include a full band as played on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. To hear that version search Elbows.
