The Goonies, Big Lebowski headline Prytania's Midnite Movies

The Goonies will show on Oct. 2 and 3 at the Prytania as part of
the theater's Midnight Movies 2 series.

The fall movie season will soon be upon us, and that means the studios will begin cramming theaters with Oscar bait and adult dramas. Inevitably, there will be some very good movies and some very boring ones. But those in search of horror and camp need not despair. They can get their fix from the Prytania Theatre’s Midnite Movies series.

“Before the hurricane we used to do a midnight series,” said Prytania general manager Eric Ramstead. “We’d been talking about doing it again for a long time, and we just figured we’d give it a try.”

The theater restarted the tradition in August with screenings of The Shining, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, A Clockwork Orange, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, and Evil Dead II.

The latest series, billed as Midnite Movies 2, started last weekend with Donnie Darko and will continue for the next six weeks with screenings on Friday and Saturday nights. The Big Lebowski will run this weekend. Future screenings will include The Goonies, The Exorcist, Pulp Fiction, The Lost Boys and more.

The Big Lebowski will screen this weekend at the Prytania.

“We tried to pick different types of movies,” Ramstead said. “The Exorcist is a classic horror movie. The Goonies is a campy movie that people love. And some of ‘em are just no-brainers, cult classics across the board like Rocky Horror.

“It’s been fairly successful,” he continues. “We’ve sold out a couple. We’ve had 200-plus for just about all of them, and the theater only holds 265.”

Some of the midnight films were booked with an eye to the pictures showing at this year’s New Orleans Film Festival, which runs from Oct. 8-15. Best Worst Movie, a documentary about the 1990 travesty Troll 2, will show at the Film Fest. Troll 2 will screen at midnight on Oct. 10.

Likewise, Dazed and Confused, Richard Linklater’s 1993 coming of age flick, will screen at midnight on Oct. 9. Linklater’s new picture, Me and Orson Welles, starring Zac Efron and Claire Danes, will be shown that week at the Film Fest.

Midnite Movies 2 runs Friday and Saturday nights at 12 a.m. through Oct. 17, at the Prytania Theatre, 5339 Prytania St. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for college students. For a full schedule, visit www.theprytania.com. Send midnight movie suggestions to Eric Ramstead at prytaniatheatre@att.net.
