Quoting the Indianapolis Colts: More of what Head Coach Jim Caldwell is saying about Denver Broncos

Here's what the Indianapolis Colts are saying as they prepare to play the Denver Broncos at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis Sunday at 1 p.m. . . .

Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell . . .

* On Broncos OLB/DE Elvis Dumervil: “He’s a lot like Dwight [Freeney]. He has girth, power and speed. If you wanted a comparison, that would be the guy. He’s [Dumervil] a non-stop player. He’s an extremely high-energy guy with a variety of pass rush moves. He’s a good run defender as well.”

* On succeeding Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy, one of the most successful coaches in NFL history: “I was certainly aware of the gravity of the situation in replacing Tony Dungy. There’s no question about that. They always tell you [as I learned on the college level], you never want to follow a legend. Those who followed Woody Hayes had some difficulty. Following Coach (Joe) Paterno won’t be a picnic for anyone. When you look at the shadow they cast, it’s pretty long. I also know when you have a situation like ours is, the one thing I knew was I didn’t have to do it alone.  If it was just me, it would be a little different story. With all the pieces we have in this organization and the great players, it certainly does help.”

* On not being mentioned for Coach of the Year honors: “This is unimportant to me. You can get an idea as to how well your team is doing by their record. I’m not certain men need anymore than that. This is a player’s game. We [coaches] serve our part and do what we are supposed to do in terms of our role. I’ve never looked for any extra recognition or anything of that nature.”

* On WR Reggie Wayne: “What I’ve seen is the first thing we saw the first time we walked into the building. He is a guy that understands what hard work is all about. I think he had that kind of work ethic before he arrived. The guys all down there at the University of Miami all talk about Reggie Wayne’s work habits. They are legendary. He has not ceased that type of effort and commitment to excellence. He has been playing at a real high level the last several years. Even when Marvin (Harrison) was here, Reggie certainly was able to distinguish himself as well. All I see is the same guy we saw when we first walked in the building. He is very, very effective with excellent hands. He is an all-around football player that loves the game.”

* On the Broncos: “They played well even through that stretch of losses. They are a good, solid football team. I think they just fought through the slump they had and got back on the winning track. They are basically the same group that was winning those games at the outset. They are the same group that is winning now. I haven’t seen much letdown at all.”
