"The Indianapolis Colts have added Ron Turner to their coaching roster, the latest change to coach Jim Caldwell’s staff," Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star reports, adding, "It might not be the last. Frank Bauer, Turner’s agent, confirmed the Colts’ addition of Turner to the Chicago Tribune. Turner joined Jim Harbaugh’s staff at Stanford earlier this month after being fired as the Chicago Bears’ offensive coordinator. It’s uncertain what position Turner will fill, and whether more changes are imminent."
Chappell goes on to write, "Caldwell’s staff already has suffered one loss with the retirement of long-time offensive line coach Howard Mudd. The future of offensive coordinator Tom Moore also is unclear. Moore, the team’s offensive coordinator since 1998, was evasive regarding his future prior to the Super Bowl, insisting he’s always taken things 'one year at a time.' The Colts had no immediate comment of Turner’s addition."
Indy Football Report Analysis: This is certainly a new era for the Colts. During seven seasons with Tony Dungy as the Colts' head coach, there were minimal changes to the coaching staff. Caldwell moved quickly upon his hiring this past offseasn to install Ray Rychleski and Larry Coyer as special teams coordinator and defensive coordinator in place of Russ Purnell and Ron Meeks, respectively. Now, the Colts are not only changing offensive line coaches, with Mudd having retired, but they are adding Turner as well. (REPORT: COLTS TO MAKE BRACKETT AMONG HIGHEST-PAID LINEBACKERS. HERE) This, too, seems a case in wich the Colts really, really wanted Turner, considering he had just taken the job at Stanford a month ago. I still don't see Moore stepping away. He always has said he'll coach until a team won't have him coach anymore, and there's no reason to think that has changed. More than likely, this is a case where the Colts wanted another person on staff -- as well as a case where Turner, who has experience coaching receivers, may be able to coach that area while longtime receivers coach Clyde Christensen continues to become more involved with the overall offense and his assistant head coach duties. Caldwell received deserved credit for making needed changes with Rychleski and Coyer a year ago. What the move to hire Turner means will be interesting to watch.
